In this election campaign, in this journey for a better life, we affirmed the CDU – the [Unitary Democratic] Coalition encompassing the Portuguese Communist Party, the Ecologist Party the Greens, the Democratic Intervention Association and many other democrats and citizens with no party affiliation – as a force of honesty, dignity and confidence. We salute the CDU activists who made of this election campaign a notable moment in defending the interests of the workers and the people and the values of April [Revolution].

On last January 25, the PCP presented its electoral programme. A programme that is a commitment to the workers and the People where we identify problems, point out causes, signal objectives, guidelines and measures to respond to them. A programme that shows that there are solutions to the main national problems, that there are resources and means to implement them if that is the direction of the political options. As we stated then, the country needs a patriotic and left-wing policy, it needs solutions for a Portugal with a future.

The conclusions of the European Council are marked, once again, by the shameful absence of any reference to the dramatic situation in Palestine due to Israel's brutal aggression. An option that reveals the cynicism and hypocrisy of those who, on other occasions, are loquacious in proclamations and condemnations about violations of international law, human rights and democracy. A position that reflects effective and undisguised complicity with the heinous crimes, massacres and atrocities committed by Israel against the Palestinian people.

ECB decides to continue the plunder of resources from families, companies and the country

The European Central Bank (ECB) decided, for the third time in a row, to maintain reference interest rates at 4.5%. This decision does not leave everything as it was. Maintaining interest rates at current values reflects the option of increasing the drain of resources from workers and families, as well as from companies, especially micro, small and medium-sized companies, to the banks, which continue to reap huge profits. This decision will also have a negative impact on State financing costs.

Comrades and friends, We are having legislative elections because the government with an absolute majority of the PS fell. Apart from the judicial inquiry invoked, the Government fell because it did not respond to the problems that affect the lives of the workers, the people, and the country. Low wages and pensions, increased cost of living, brutal increase in housing rents and bank loan payments, deterioration of public services: this is the legacy of the Government with an absolute majority of the PS.
